d.i.y. acid wash shirt

All you ’90s kids rejoice: Acid wash is having a fashion moment yet again. When we saw it strut down Rodarte’s Fall 2013 runway we did what any label-loving, salary-less student would do: cry. But then, in true grunge fashion, we took to the contents of our under-the-sink cabinet and emerged with spray bottle and bleach in hand, ready to put our own spin on the trend. Find out how to recreate the acid-washed look yourself (minus the traditional acid wash process) in a few (super simple) steps below.

What You’ll Need: A dark-colored T-shirt (cotton fabric works best), bleach, and a spray bottle. (Make sure you wear clothes you won’t mind ruining—bleach can do some serious damage!)

Step 1: Pour bleach into the spray bottle. Working outside (or in a well-ventilated area), start spraying the T-shirt. Press down lightly on the spray nozzle to achieve a “splatter” effect.

Step 2: Let the shirt dry (the bleach spots will slowly lighten to a bright white). When dry, thoroughly rinse the shirt with water and send it through a wash cycle alone.

Step 3: Accessorize!

d.i.y. punk statement necklace

From the Met Gala to the leather-heavy, spiked and studded fall runways, the fashion scene is currently reveling in the resurgence of all things punk. Luckily, statement-making accessories are the simplest way to amp up the rock factor of any look this season. With a handful of safety pins and a few well-placed spikes, we transformed an old bib necklace into an eye-catching punk statement piece to upgrade any fall look.

Here's what you'll need: A mesh bib necklace, safety pins, spike beads, and a gold link chain

Step 1: Thread the safety pins through the chain of the necklace.
Vary the angle of each safety pin so that it has a more chaotic feel.

Step 2: When you’re happy with the safety pin placement, open each safety pin (one at a time!) and thread the gold link chain onto it. Try to make a zig-zag pattern across the necklace with the gold chain, starting with the lowest safety pin on the left of the necklace.

Step 3: Then, thread a spike bead onto each safety pin. (We alternated between silver and gold beads.)

That’s it! Style it up with a leather jacket and T-shirt for maximum punk-rock appeal.

punk-inspired: graffiti nails

Inspired by all things punk in light of the Met Gala (and the amazing Bergdorfs windows!), I had a little graffiti fun with my nails. Time to break out some plaid and Converse to celebrate..

think pink

I had this little tub of hair coloring sitting on my counter for weeks, just waiting to be used. A combination of end-of-semester craziness and some #BeautyChat-ing finally drove me to go pink!

hair wear makeup (available here), mac viva glam gaga lipstick (similar)

One shampoo later and poof! Back to blonde just in time for class.
This stuff is my inner wild child's new best friend ;)
