outfit anatomy: dressing for the cold

As a seasoned Northeasterner, I've experienced my fair share of frigid temps and ever-dreaded snow. I've resorted to puffy coats and weatherproof boots far too many times to mention, and usually let style fall by the wayside when winter works its powdery magic.

But when looking like a bundled up marshmallow simply won't do, here is my recipe for cold weather outfit perfection that is every bit as warm and toasty as its bulkier counterpart:

brooks brothers camel hair coat (available here)
gap sweater (men's)
plush fleece lined leggings (available here)
zara booties (similar)
asos beanie (available here)
knit fingerless gloves
alexander wang lia bag (available here)

How do you stay warm when cold weather strikes?

5 ways to wear sweatpants | take 4

asos sweatshirt (similar), asos sweatpants (similar), asos beanie (similar), nike dunk sky high wedge sneakers (similar), alexander wang emile tote (stolen from sally - available here)

Here's another way we styled up sweatpants for our StyleCaster series! This time we took a cue from designers like Alexander Wang and went full-on sweats-on-sweats. We broke up the monochromatic look with a pair of colorful kicks, and a must-have beanie.

snow leopard

I can assure you these snow shots lasted all of two seconds before we realized it was completely ridiculous for me to have ventured out in the snow in heels in the first place. But we're not ones to let a good snowfall go to waste. We make it useful for something - even if that something is a few good laughs!

Anyway.. I broke out Mommy's feather sweater again. This time I paired it with Sally's leopard? cheetah? animal print pants. Not sure what birds these feathers are supposed to belong to, but I'm pretty sure they weren't hanging out with leopards in the wild. However, the marriage of the two in this super cozy, super relaxed ensemble is sartorial perfection in my book (even if it offends the laws of nature).

sky high

nike sky high wedge sneakers (available here), asos oversized beanie (men's, available here), asos dip back top (available here),
j brand coated jeans (available here), ralph lauren coat (similar), gorjana lovebird necklace (available here)

Finally gave in to temptation and picked up these Nikes! Though I'm in desperate need of a new pair of regular sneakers (you know, for that little place called the gym...), sneakers with a 3" heel are just so much more fun. The treadmill can wait ;)

black magic

There's really no introduction needed for a good black-and-white ensemble. Thankfully the weather's been kind to us lately, and I've been taking advantage by wearing this coat as often as I can. I'm obsessed with the length - it's the perfect excuse to wear heels!

While we're in the throes of a hurricane (and probably without internet access!), we thought it'd be fun to take a look back at how we've styled some of our favorite pieces in the past! First up: the beanie..
